Mauritanian Powder Glass (Kiffa) Beads

The following is excerpted from African Beads: Jewels of a Continent,  by Evelyn Simak with Carl Dreibelbis and an introduction by Lois Sherr Dubin.   Copyright 2009 by Africa Direct.   Reproduced with permission.

The term “Kiffa bead” is a fairly recent name coined by bead collectors from the United States during the second half of the 20th century. The name is derived from the town of Kiffa, a bead making center situated in south central Mauritania. Kiffa beads represent a bead type unique to Mauritanian culture and society.

Mauritania used to be part of the ancient Ghana Empire, which lasted from 750 to 1240 CE and encompassed southeastern Mauritania and parts of Mali, growing rich from the trans-Saharan trade in gold, ivory and salt.  Koumbi Saleh is believed to have been the empire's capital. Its ruins are located near the town of Kiffa. Glass beads are still being found along the old trade and pilgrim routes and in the sand dunes that now cover the ruins of Koumbi Saleh.

Introducing New Chunky Charm Bracelets

Turquoise silver charm braceelts

We are Happy to Introduce our new

Chunky Charm Bracelet Collection

These limited edition charm bracelets feature hand carved stone charms and sterling silver lobster claw clasps.

Shown here are Turquoise Buddha Charm, Turquoise Cross Charm, and Turquoise Heart Charm.  The charms are all made from turquoise.  The silver beads are antique Tuareg beads from Mali, Africa. The Tuareg people are a nomadic tribe and descendants of the Berbers. They were known as the Desert Noblemen and traveled around the Sahara Desert region. These beautiful old beads date from the early to mid 1900s, and have a lovely patina.  They must have great stories to tell of distant travels and lives.

These bracelets are great to wear alone and even more fun with two or three stacked together. They are available in three different lengths; 6.5” , 7" , and 7.5” .  As always if you need a different size just let us know.

We will be adding new bracelets to this collection with charms carved from more exotic stones, so if you are interested be sure to check back often,  or you can sign up for our New Product Notification Newsletter, which will inform you every time  we add new jewelry pieces.

Welcome to the new and improved KatieO Jewelry website. We have decided to make this a jewelry resource site as well a place to buy our unique, one of a kind jewelry. The beads and pendants that I use in my designs are more to me than just beautiful components. They are artifacts that contain fascinating tales of distant cultures. Every time I look at one, I can't help but wonder who made it, who has worn it, what it meant to them, and how far it has traveled  to reach me. The resource section and videos on this site are for those of you who share my interests and curiosities. This will be an ongoing jewelry project and we will be adding new articles, resources and videos on a constant basis. Some of the available resources we have now are:
